  1. 3+ years later, this is still relevant! I'm looking for a reasonably priced used L zoom lens that will predominantly be used for video. The fact that this lens is quieter than the 24-105 f/4 mk1 has made up my mind. Thanks for the great review.

  2. Thanks for this! I've been trying to figure out I need the f2.8 or the f.4 IS, and this video has been super helpful in my decision making process.

  3. Thankz mate! Was looking for an IS lens for video and was debating between this and the primes from canon with IS. This looks like it will be suitable for what I need without giving up that weather sealing. This zoom combined with my 100mm f2.8L IS macro will be all the kit I need for car videography. Also fills the hole in my photography kit from 35mm – 100mm.

  4. Thanks for this Harv! I've been looking at the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 for youtube/run-n-gun work so it was great to hear about this classic again… have always loved using this lens when I've had the chance but never had the $$ for it… Might need to just use the cheaper Sigma and go with manual focus (I "hear" the auto is loud as heck!).
    Anyway cheers!

  5. Thanks for the information regarding IS noise, that was exactly what I was looking for. Have checked a million reviews, you're the only one that mention this. Thanks:)

  6. hi, great video. 1 question, when using image stabilization can you hear the IS motor in the lens? in the 24-105 version 1 you can clearly hear the motor.

  7. So just got this Lens. Very happy but I feel like I am hearing it while recording, tried it with my rode and still feel I hear it. Obviously, I am in a very quiet room just wondered if anyone else feels the same if this is a trait of the lens or if I may be going crazy

  8. Great review… I follow all what you said however, I was wondering which lens will you recommend for a canon t6i for fashion video making?

  9. Really enjoyable review!! I don't shoot Canon (my son does), but I was curious about this lens for his new 6d and ran into your review. Your approach is a wonderful blend of casual but informed and it's brilliant. I will be checking in and see what else you have, your videos are very easy to view and enjoy.
    Cheers, dave

  10. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts, I am trying to do food/portrait and I've seen some people use this. I'm planning to use this on crop body do you think it's worth it for the quality or makes more sense to go with sigma 17-55 2.8/24-70 2.8 (discontinued) or canon 17-50 (very pricey though) and 1 or 2 primes. I also tested the 24-105 f/4 i two days ago and it was very hard to listen to and slow/couldnt focus and really just suffered a lot.!! hope to hear back thank u

  11. Great Channel. I was looking at the Tamron 24-70 f2.8 but I find it gives a weird Onion effect Boker. I'm going to go with the Canon 24-70 f4. Thanks for the Review

  12. Love the style of your review; comes across very honest. I bought this lens a few months back after watching this, and I'm like WOW!… Clarity, sharpness, micro-contrast and colour is off the "fe'shizzle!" I was a bit concerned about it only being f4 as I'm using it on a crop 7d, and 70d, and I mainly wanted it to shoot events which are usually quite dark, and my concerns are pretty much borne out. Luckily I have a Sigma 24-70 f2.8 which I was going to sell for various reasons, but am now going to keep. The Canon is now used for street photography, and studio portraits where it absolutely blows my other lenses away in terms of sheer quality. I have nothing that even comes close! The Macro mode is another amazing feature that I hadn't bargained for, but has opened up a whole new world of opportunities. The Canon 24-70 f4 is light, compact, silent, quick focussing and beautifully made as well as being weather resistant. Well done Canon, and well done Harv for reviewing it.
